Cleary Square's Old Pizza Oven Now Opens at 6 a.m.

Last October, the door at Hyde Park Avenue and River Street had a small white sign that said "temporarily" closed. Universal Hub photographed it the day after the last pie. Almost exactly a year later the lights are back on before dawn. The big pizza oven is still there, and the menu now leads with eggs.

That room is Sunrise Cafe Bagels & Diner, and Universal Hub reported it open on October 11, 2026. It's the first new place in a while to add a morning seat in Hyde Park instead of taking one away. It also opens three hours earlier than the neighborhood's other sit-down breakfast.

The Room Had Been Making Pizza Since the Mid-1960s

The Hyde Park Papa Gino's opened in the mid-1960s. According to Universal Hub, it was only the fifth restaurant in Michael Valerio's pizza business. That business started in East Boston as Piece O'Pizza and grew to more than 200 locations across New England. The building burned in 2005 and the restaurant reopened. It also outlasted the Brigham's across the street.

It served its last pizza the weekend of October 25 and 26, 2025. That left Boston with one Papa Gino's. Boston.com reported that a company spokesperson called the closure part of a broader effort to redirect company resources. The company gave no reason specific to this location.

The address is 1270 River Street. It's worth getting right, because one Hyde Park index lists the same corner under Hyde Park Avenue. The Boston Licensing Board's August 2026 agenda and Boston Restaurant Talk both use River Street.

Two Years of Hyde Park Losing Morning Spots

The Papa Gino's closing was the third loss of a morning spot in Hyde Park in under two years.

When What happened Where
January 27, 2024 Coffee Break Cafe served its last day 680 Truman Parkway
September 2025 Starbucks announced it would close Hyde Park's only location Shops at Riverwood, River Street
October 2025 Papa Gino's closed after about 60 years 1270 River Street
By October 11, 2026 Sunrise Cafe Bagels & Diner opened 1270 River Street

The Starbucks had only opened in 2023. It was a casualty of a corporate restructuring, and Universal Hub noted that the nearest Dunkin' locations were all more than a mile from it. The Coffee Break Cafe closing in 2024 took an independent counter off Truman Parkway.

After those closings, the morning options along the main corridor came down to a short list. Hyde Park Main Streets' 2026 business directory lists three Dunkin' locations on Hyde Park Avenue, at 942, 1200 and 1800, the last one in Wolcott Square. The main independent sit-down option is Delicias Colombianas at 1231 River Street, and its own site lists Colombian breakfast starting at 9 a.m. daily.

When the Universal Hub reviewer finished breakfast at Sunrise, he summed up the change this way:

"On the whole, if you find yourself on Hyde Park Avenue in the morning, now you have an option besides the three Dunk's and Delicias Colombianas."

That line comes from Universal Hub's review, published October 11, 2026.

What a 6 a.m. Opening Changes

The hours are what change things. Sunrise opens at 6 a.m., and its license from the city allows it to stay open until 10 p.m. That puts a sit-down breakfast in Cleary Square three hours before the breakfast service Delicias Colombianas lists on its site. Two places serving breakfast at different hours on the same street is good for both of them.

Here's what you'll find inside, according to the reporting so far:

  • Seating: 34 seats.
  • Ordering: You order at the counter, and staff bring the food to your table.
  • Breakfast: Eggs, omelets, French toast, home fries, bacon, pancakes, waffles and bagels. There are also breakfast tacos with eggs, cheese, pico de gallo and avocado, with bacon or sausage.
  • Coffee: New England Coffee.
  • Later in the day: Lunch includes tacos, and Boston Restaurant Talk reports pasta dishes on the menu too.

The Universal Hub reviewer ordered the Sunrise breakfast: two scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon and homemade potatoes, which came with a couple of pancakes. He added a sesame bagel with cream cheese and a medium coffee. He said the eggs, bacon, home fries and pancakes were good. He also wrote that the staff were friendly and patient with customers still waking up.

For parking, the reviewer used the municipal lot across River Street, the same one people use for Ron's. He was there on a morning milk run to the Shaw's down the street.

The sign out front pushed bagels, bagel sandwiches and coffee before the doors opened, but the posted hours always suggested more than a bagel counter. With a 10 p.m. license and pasta on the menu, the room that served pizza for about 60 years now has the hours to cover most of the day.

Where Breakfast Leads This Month

An early breakfast in Cleary Square works well as the start of a longer day. October has a few Hyde Park events that pair with it, in calendar order:

  1. October 5 through October 30. "City Scenes: Photographs by Robert Richmond" is up all day at the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library.
  2. Wednesday, October 14, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Crafty Wednesdays at the same branch.
  3. Saturday, October 17, 7 to 10 p.m. The Hyde Park Main Streets Oktoberfest Fundraiser at George Wright Golf Course, with live music, dinner, dancing, raffles and a cash bar.
  4. Thursday, October 22. The free LiveFitArmy community run, open to all paces, leaves from Roundhead Brewing Company and repeats every other Thursday.

Roundhead's taproom is at 1 Westinghouse Plaza, Suite i107. Boston.com covered its opening on November 4, 2022, and described it as Massachusetts' first Latino-owned brewery. It now runs a pizza kitchen next to the beer, with food baked to order. Papa Gino's is gone from Cleary Square, but Hyde Park still makes pizza at Roundhead, and the pizza oven in Cleary Square now sits in a diner that opens at 6 a.m.

The Creative Connector calendar lists a few more dates for later in the fall. There's a Halloween-themed sip-and-paint on October 22, and Ritmo y Cerveza, a vinyl-record night, on November 12. The calendar doesn't list a venue for the sip-and-paint yet, so check the Creative Connector events page before you head out.

The corner of Hyde Park Avenue and River Street now opens at 6 a.m., seats 34 and still has the pizza oven, and it's the first business on this list that has added a morning seat in Hyde Park since January 2024.

At Juan Real Estate Group, we watch Cleary Square's storefronts as closely as its homes, and photographing a listing means showing the corner it sits on. Let's connect if you'd like a free valuation or consultation that includes what's changed on your block.
